Direct Observation of a Sharp Transition to Coherence in Dense Cores

چکیده
We present NH3 observations of the B5 region in Perseus obtained with the Green Bank Telescope (GBT). The map covers a region large enough (∼11′×14′) that it contains the entire dense core observed in previous dust continuum surveys. The dense gas traced by NH3(1,1) covers a much larger area than the dust continuum features found in bolometer observations. The velocity dispersion in the central region of the core is small, presenting subsonic non-thermal motions which are independent of scale. However, it is thanks to the coverage and high sensitivity of the observations that we present the detection, for the first time, of the transition between the coherent core and the dense but more turbulent gas surrounding it. This transition is sharp, increasing the velocity dispersion by a factor of 2 in less than 0.04 pc (the 31′′ beam size at the distance of Perseus,∼250 pc). The change in velocity dispersion at the transition is ≈ 3 kms−1 pc−1. The existence of the transition provides a natural definition of dense core: the region with nearly-constant subsonic non-thermal velocity dispersion. From the analysis presented here we can not confirm nor rule out a corresponding sharp density transition. Activated bond-breaking processes preempt the observation of a sharp glass-glass transition in dense short-ranged attractive colloids.
We study-using molecular dynamics simulations-the temperature dependence of the dynamics in a dense short-ranged attractive colloidal glass to find evidence of the kinetic glass-glass transition predicted by the ideal mode coupling theory. According to the theory, the two distinct glasses are stabilized, one by excluded volume and the other by short-ranged attractive interactions. By studying t...
متن کاملCoherent Dense Cores
In a study of the velocity dispersion of molecular gas in maps of four dense cores, we Ðnd that : 3 (1) within the interiors of dense cores, the line widths are roughly constant at a value slightly but signiÐcantly higher than a purely thermal line width ; and (2) at the edges of the maps of the dense cores, it appears that the line width starts to increase. We suggest that these dense cores ar...

In this study, the capabilities of Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) time series data and machine learning have been evaluated for land cover mapping in Iran. In this way, a time series of Sentinel-1 SAR data (including 16 SLC images with approximately 24 days time interval) from 2018 to 2020 were used for a region of Ahvaz County located in Khuzestan province. Using InSAR proces...

The phenomenon of capillary condensation is studied through the weight change of condensed phase in an internally wetted porous pd catalyst pellet during the course of exothermic reacation of cyclohexane hydrogenation in a thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA). The direct measurement of condensed phase indicates that evaporation of condensed phase is confined to the macropores of catalyst pellet at ...
